Happy New Year!

2016. Gone. But it barely began.

Life has its benchmarks. From the time of my first memory until my high school graduation took forever. Now it seems our oldest grandchild was just born. Oh. Wait. She is taking her driver’s test in a few weeks. Darn jet stream.

And how was your 2016? Ours was quite nice, thank you. This was our first full year with Jamie and Jordan Leopold’s Mississippi Gardens where Erin Wade is Mintahoe’s enthusiastic and effective Sales Consultant. What a top notch trio! What a run of excellent events!

We signed a long-term catering agreement a year ago with Tim George’s Van Dusen Mansion. Tim and his superb marketing skills have that venue flying! We took over the Garden Room of Eden Prairie just over a year ago, returning the vibrancy to that beautiful space. Lots of opportunities and lots of growth keep us youthful even though my new headshot tells a different tale.

Outside of my aging, there is much to reflect on and be thankful for. Look at our key people. They are all still here, making my life more enjoyable because I feel fortunate that I get to work with each of them. Mintahoe is about 24 years old and we have a solid crew that has been with us for more than twenty years. Nice! Nicest is that they truly like each other and they tolerate my idiosyncrasies. Our sales have doubled since we merged two groups of friendly competitors eight years ago and our quality has more than doubled, making us the Mintahoe we are today, the best catering company around. We have done a lot, but we have just begun. Bring on 2017! We are ready.

Mintáhoe Culture

The calendar is moving. It always does. Our busy season began early in May and we typically quiet down in October. This year, October is our second busiest month of 2016 and quiet days are becoming rare.

One of the true blessings in my life (in addition to having the family that I am so fortunate to have) is coming to the office every day. The privilege of working with the Mintahoe Family is not work. Whether I walk through the office, stop by an event, or pop into our kitchen, I hear “Hi Jim,” and catch a friendly smile. It is not by one or two. It is Mintahoe. It is who we are.

I can’t put it better than Lorenzana, one of our stellar dishwashers.

“Mintahoe is a wonderful place to work. Thank you to everyone who says hi or makes a joke. You are an excellent team. Even dishes are the most important thing to do. As a dishwasher I’m so proud of myself thanks to everyone.”

What can I say? This is what we want Mintahoe to be – the best place to work with people who respect and care about each other. There is nothing wrong with being proud – I know I am.

Minnesota State Fair

The Minnesota State Fair is a big deal! We are fortunate to be a part of all that goes on for these twelve glorious days. Mintahoe manages Minnesota Wine Country at the State Fair. Our culinary team creates buzz-worthy menu items that incorporate Minnesota wines. This year, our Candied Bacon Donut Sliders with a chocolate red wine ganache appeared in Travel and Leisure, ABC News, the Chicago Tribune, and many local publications, getting tons of rave reviews. I highly recommend them as an appetizer or dessert for your Holiday Party!

The Best of Summer

Mintahoe catered two very large events this summer, both in our Picnics Plus! outdoor catering division. The first was a corporate block party for 13,000 guests on a beautiful June day. Guests enjoyed fresh burgers, pulled pork sandwiches, lots of snacks, and lots of games! We also catered seven weddings that day pushing our staff count to more than 200! That is a lot of employees for a catering company, but even in the quiet times of winter, our roster does not go below 100 anymore.

Our second super-event was on a sunny day in July. 5,000 guests enjoyed beef brisket, grilled chicken and many salads and sides with a beautiful presentation. We prepared a ton of snacks – corn dogs, cheese curds, kettle corn, French fries, mini donuts and a whole lot more. (Did you know that we do a lot of deep frying on site at our clients’ event locations?) There were three bands, carnival rides, inflatables, carnival games along with our food and snacks spread out over a large office parking lot. The evening ended with a truly magnificent fireworks display. Our crew of over 150 did what it always does – made us look really, really good.

We are the very best at what we do.

Not long ago, Tracy Rabenberg, our Executive Chef (the best that there is in addition to being a truly wonderful guy) walked into my office with his grin preceding him through the door with a fortune cookie that read:

“Spectacular Accomplishment is never preceded by less than Spectacular Preparation” His only comment was “That’s us!”

Crumb Grabbings

Some years ago, we generated a newsletter – Crumb Grabbings – that we shared with people who were important to us, those who were helping us make our company what it has become. This is the First Edition of the revived “Crumb Grabbings”. The chances of this ever becoming a collector’s item are less than slim but we hope to share insights as to what Mintahoe is about and our hopes for the future. I will shift the focus to our superb employees and our many events in future editions.

2016: A Big Year For Mintahoe

In January of 2015, we moved into our Corporate Headquarters to 2850 Anthony Lane South, Minneapolis 55148. This was a big deal for us. Since then, we have completed the final touches, all 25,000 square feet of commissary and 12,000 square feet of offices, then added our private tasting room and finished what was needed to settle in. All is well and getting better. Come and see what we have done!

Mintahoe has many skills and much to offer. We are the largest pure catering company in Minnesota. During our busiest weeks, we employ more than 200 people and we have at least 100 on our payroll at all times. Mintahoe consists of three divisions: Full Service Catering, an Outdoor Events division (Picnics Plus!) and a Corporate Drop-off Catering division (Professional Foodservice).

Our Mintahoe Full Service offerings continue to grow as we increase our exclusive catering contracts and are added to Preferred Catering lists at many venues.

Unique Venue Collection

Leopold’s Mississippi Gardens – a stunning venue on the Mississippi.

Van Dusen Mansion – now owned and managed by the same people who own A’BULAE.

A’BULAE – a gorgeous, modern venue with a rooftop ceremony site.

Nicollet Island Pavilion – with its exquisite indoor and outdoor capabilities.

Winehaven – nestled in the vineyard of the largest wine producer in the State.

Minnesota Boat Club – a historic building on the banks of the Mississippi in Saint Paul.

Garden Room of Eden Prairie – a beautiful setting.

Minneapolis Central Library – a modern facility with a spacious feeling.

Minnesota Wine Country at the Fair – twelve days of wine and food at the Minnesota State Fair.

And our newest addition: Minnesota Masonic Heritage Center where we have an exclusive beverage contract.

Whatever the needs and wishes of our clients, Mintahoe has the best solution.

Endless Catering Capabilities

On a busy weekend, we may cater twenty weddings in addition to half a dozen picnics along with drop-off deliveries. There are some hectic times but we get done what needs to be done. Our Executive Management Team consists of six managers and five of the six average twenty years with Mintahoe. The core of our culinary team has worked with Mintahoe for more than a dozen years. We have excellent employees and they stay with us.

Picnics Plus! offers more than just picnics, providing on site grilling and extensive menus for outdoor events of every type and size. Our largest event this year was for 13,000 guests although our busiest was for an event that had 5,000 guests as the menu, snacks and décor were more extensive; we had 150 staff working at that event.

Professional Foodservice is one of the largest corporate drop-off catering companies in the region, serving the entire Twin Cities area. We may deal with an order as small as ten box lunches and there have been similar orders for more than ten thousand meals.

Awards & Accolades

We cater events of all sizes and we do them well. Our list of awards and recognition is extensive. Best Catering Company. Best Off-Premise Catered Event. Best Menu Innovation. Best New Venue. Best Caterer. Best Outdoor Reception Site. We are good at what we do!

Enough about Mintahoe!

We appreciate our employees. We appreciate our customers. We appreciate the venues we work with. We appreciate our vendors. Thank you for making us what we have become. And we have just begun.
